If I Am Missing or Dead

Upon first glance of this novel I pegged it to be a murder mystery fiction book. I bought it based on the cover, and didn't read the back or find out anything about it before I cracked the spine. I was shocked with what I had stumbled upon.

Growing up I spent time in an abusive home. While everyone else in the house seemed to ignore the dominant man in the house, I was a renegade, calling 911 at the first verbal threat. Of course, calling 911 only eventually exacerbated the situation, but calling every single time eventually shifted the balance of power. This lead to a divorce, which bettered the lives of all parties involved.

Janine Latus knows first hand about this power struggle. She knows all about living in fear. She also knows how to stand up for herself and leave a harming situation. Her sister Amy didn't make it out of an abusive situation with her life. She leaves behind a letter hidden in her desk detailing information to be used in the event she is found to be missing or dead.

The book opens on Janine and Amy's childhood and follows the families all the way through Amy's untimely death. The girls were always surrounded by abuse, it came in many different forms, but the power struggle was always there. The men they meet are cowards, afraid to lose the upper hand and so they use force, or fear to keep women in check.

A candid look at a life of abuse and fear mongering. Janine has made it out on the other side and is sharing her story to help save the lives of other women who feel trapped in unhealthy situations.

Janine- Your tombstone will never read "I was gonna.." it will read "I did". You did.

Oh my! Was this book like disturbing? I don't care for books that just share so much detail into abuse and what not. It sounds like a good book though!

Sometimes the best books are the ones that make you really uncomfortable while reading them. Its good to step out of your comfort zone every now and again. I am following it up with a fluff book though, to rest my noggin!
