The Opposite of Love

Emily has been in a relationship with Andrew for two years. They're comfortable, close, passionate and happy. Yet, when Andrew starts dropping hints that he's ready for the next step, Emily's neuroses step into play and she ends things with him. She hasn't fallen out of love, she hasn't grown uncomfortable, she just can't commit to that. When she ends things, Andrew slips easily out of her life beyond the normal run-ins that can be expected within their circle, a little too easily. Meanwhile Emily's grandfather, her rock and sole support system, is slipping into dementia and she doesn't know how to handle it. When her mom died, she and her dad shut down, neither knowing how to cope without her, or cope with each other. Emily is slipping into a quiet despair and realizes leaving Andrew may have been one of her bigger mistakes in her lifetime. But how can you persuade someone whose tried so hard to break down your walls to give you another chance when they've given you so many as it is?

I've had this book on my bookshelf since it came out in hardcover early last year. I've had the inclination to read it several times over but never pulled it to read until I saw the paperback cover (love it!!). I loved this book! It wouldn't seem like Emily would be a very likeable character, setting hurdles in front of herself at every turn, but I really ended up rooting for her to make amends with herself, her family, and Andrew. The book flows quickly, there's not a dull moment, and I ended up just a little bit vested in every character. I didn't know what to expect from the ending, but was not disappointed in the least in any part of this novel.
