Half human Chloe has lived in Sugar Maple all her life, as the only human after her father passed. Though she was half-sorceress, she never had her powers until she fell in love with Luke, and then her powers were realized though she didn't necessarily have control of them. While their love is instant and deep, Chloe still has to fulfill her destiny as laid out by her long ago ancestor Aerin. To give Sugar Maple another daughter of her lineage to protect the town and keep it in this realm rather than give it to the Fae who think the Sugar Maple belongs beyond the mist.
Chloe believes with all of her heart that Luke will stay as leaving will never be an option for her. Then Luke's ex wife comes to town with news that their daughter is trying to contact them and she needs his help. That Luke has an ex wife is a shock to Chloe, the daughter something of a slap in the face. When she finds out that Steffie has been dead for two years, her heart breaks for both Luke and his ex-wife. She tries to help them contact their daughter before she realizes the leader of the Fae has Steffie in her prison and is using her to release herself from Chloe's banishing spell and gain control once and for all of Sugar Maple. Now Chloe must fight for her town, her townspeople, Luke and she may not come out of it unscathed.
First I need to admit the premise of the book sounded interesting to me but I didn't think I'd love it at all. WRONG. Forgive the pun, but this book really had me spellbound (I know, I know). I tore through it in 4 hours and was so excited when I realized it was a sequel. More Chloe! The writing was fluid, the character development rapid, and the main characters immensely likable. I'm not positive that I loved the ending (actually I was kind of angered at it) but seeing that it was a sequel made me hope it's either going to become a trilogy or even a series. Chloe is a fabulous character, and I need to know more about her and Luke. If you've read Casting Spells, you'll want to read the follow up. And if you haven't, this book acts great as a stand alone. I look forward to reading much more of Ms. Bretton.
Check out the trailer below. A big thanks to Dorothy at Pump Up Your Book Promotion for the review copy! I loved it!
