"All my single ladies, now put your hands up." A little Beyonce to start this review seemed appropriate. I suspect that Mormon author and comedian Elna Baker might like this song quite a bit. "If you like it then you should have put a ring on it" cause this girl isn't putting out before she's married, a quality you won't likely find in too many young women these days.
This hot child in the city wasn't your stereotypical Mormon growing up. Until her adult life she had never even lived in Utah (shocking right?). She grew up traveling the world, taking the path less traveled. She always questioned her faith to a certain extent, wanting undeniable verification of her beliefs. Once she made the decision to move to New York and go to college instead of the Mormon favorite BYU, she had a whole new set of challenges to face.
Elna writes about her struggle to maintain her own identity as she is growing up. She loses eighty pounds and all of a sudden finds herself attractive, but wonders what else she has lost in the process. She finds the man of her dreams, but finds out weeks later that he is in fact an athiest. She questions her faith, and her ability to stay true to herself when she finds that nothing seems to be going right for her.
I really enjoyed this book. Elna shares with us the stories that shaped her life and she holds nothing back in the process. The book is funny, insightful, and charming all at the same time. Don't worry about religion being in the book a lot, its not at all preachy, its an interesting look into her life as a Mormon. Must read memoir of 2009.

Check out this video, what she talks about in this stand up routine is all in the book. Its an excellent way to get a sneak peak into the novel due on shelves in October 2009.

Definitely sounds like a fun, unconventional read! I'm always drawn to people questioning how the world works -- whether through religion, government, education, anything. And the title definitely got my attention! :) Thanks for the sneak peek -- I think I'll look for this one next month!
