A former speech-writer for George Bush has written a tell-all book about his time in the White House. What does this have to do with Banned Books Week 2009? Everything.
In the book Matt Latimer discusses the fact that famed author J.K. Rowling was denied the Presidential Medal of Freedom because of the fact that her "Harry Potter" books promote witchcraft. Seriously.
All of this is interesting, because Laura Bush was always very vocal about how she loved the "Harry Potter" books and he world that they created.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is given to people that have contributed to the betterment of society through contributions to security or the national interests of the United States, world peace, culture or other endeavors. The president made the ultimate decision that J.K. Rowling should not receive the medal based on the promotion of witchcraft in the novels.
How very Salem of you Mr. President!
