Feelings are mixed coming out of reading this book. On one hand, I think it was interesting and compelling, while on the other hand I think that it lacked depth and substance.
I like the authors take on the supernatural werewolves. It was unlike anything I have read thus far, and that always goes a long way with me. Originality is so important, and unfortunately a lot of books lack it, especially within the supernatural YA realm.
Grace was attacked by wolves as a child, and has ever since been fascinated with them, one in particular draws the most interest from her. When she finds "her" wolf Sam in human form, and injured, she feels compelled to stop at nothing to help this wolf.
Clocking in at close to 400 pages, this book has plenty of time to develop complex relationships between characters. I found the emotions to be very superficial, and lacking any sort of real depth. I could feel the author reaching for that depth, but sadly falling short again and again. This short step leaves a lot of the story seeming melodramatic and tiresome.
For a large portion of the book, the main character Grace isn't attending school. She had never missed a day prior to her wolf lover becoming human so it would stand to reason that her extended absence would be noticed. The author makes a slight attempt to explain why truancy officers aren't banging down her door, but falls short yet again. We wind up with a teenage girl, that has a wolf/ boy living in her room and sleeping with her every night, while she skips school everyday and hangs out at candy shops. Some explanation was absolutely necessary.
The overall story-line is interesting, but the bits a pieces that contribute to that story-line aren't strong enough to hold it together and make it believable.
While overall I would say that I have lukewarm feelings toward this book, in the long run it is quite forgettable.
