The Grey's Anatomy star has signed on for the lead role in "One for the Money," based on the first book in the immensely popular Stephanie Plum series of novels by Janet Evanovich, Variety.com reports.
Heigl will play Plum, a lingerie buyer who takes on work as a bounty hunter to make some extra cash, setting off a series of adventures that has lead to 19 books so far, the most recent being "Finger Lickin' Fifteen."
In "One for the Money," Plum learns the ropes of bounty hunting by chasing down a wanted cop named Joseph Morelli, who happens to be the guy who took her virginity back when she was 16 and wrote about it on the bathroom wall of Mario's Sub Shop.
The movie version has been in the works since before "One for the Money" even hit the shelves in 1994, after Columbia Tristar snapped up the rights.
Reese Witherspoon was rumored to have been the original choice to play Plum, but the movie reportedly had languished on the development back burner when that casting did not pan out.
"One for the Money" will be Heigl's second big collaboration with Columbia Pictures and Lakeshore Entertainment, after "The Ugly Truth," which scored big at the box office despite being panned by critics, raking in $200 million worldwide.
The 20th Stephanie Plum novel, "Sizzling Sixteen," is set for release on June 22, according to the author's Web site.
I've never read this series, but I know Holly adores it, so I'm interested in seeing how many think Stephanie Plum was completely miscast?

Wow... she probably wouldn't have made my list of the top five actresses likely to be cast in this role, but I'm willing to keep an open mind. But really, who cares about who plays Stephenie? I want to know who they've got for Morelli and Ranger...
I love this series and I love Katherine Heigl but she definitely wouldn't have been the first actress to spring to mind for Stephanie Plum. Of course, I can't see Reese Witherspoon in that role at all either.

Bad casting, in my opinion. I'm a Jersey girl, so I have a VERY clear image of what I think Stephanie should be, and Heigl is not it. No offense to the actress.
Sure, the novels take place in the early 90s when hair was still big, and spandex bike shorts were considered fashion. The studio wants to bring it into the 21st century, and I get that.
They need to find a young Marisa Tomei.

I have to admit, I'm not sure how much I like this! Katherine Heigl is a good actress, but she is NOT what Stephanie Plum is described as. Still, it should be really interesting and I'll definitely give it a chance.

Heigl doesn't really fit the role if you ask me. But, I'm trying to remain optimistic - maybe she'll surprise us. I was hoping for Anne Hathaway. My original vote was for Lauren Graham (who is perfect for the role) but that was years ago and now she's a bit old for the part.

I am dissapointed - I think K.H is great, but so not Plum Pudding Material... Brunette, shoulder length hair, wears sweats with ketchup stains... I know, they are called Costume Designers and Make Up Artists, yet one questions the choice. My own embodiement of Joe Morelli is Josh Duhamel. Maybe not Italian enough but what does Stephanie Plum say "bedroom eyes"? Check. Brown Hair? Check. Tall and Handsome? Check. Makes your body temperature rise? Check, check, check!

NO! NO! NO! This is so wrong! Sandra Bullock would have been perfect! I also saw Anne Hathaway mentioned, and now thinking that would have been ok too. I'm so disappointed now. The way KH dogs the show that made her famous, the writers, etc. She even dogs some of the movies she makes after she makes them. I can't believe this.

Absolutely NOT! I've always pictured someone like Sandra Bulloch. Stephanie had brown hair and wasn't a beauty queen like Katherine Heigl. Benjamin Bratt as Morelli and The Rock as Rangeman. That's all I have to say about that.
ugh im not happy with this at all...shes way too pretty pretty. Im not saying stephanie plum is not pretty I just didnt imagine her as a busty blonde actress.. and changing heigl's hair color will not help. I was thinking along the lines of kerri russel or natalie portman...as far as looks go...i dont think anyone can actually play stephanie plum, shes too awesome for anyone actress to really capture her quirkiness and charm!

Katherine wouldn't have been my first choice either but Sandra Bullock is almost 50 so she wouldn't be an accurate portrayal either. I think with makeup they can make Katherine look more like Stephanie.
I was surprised that Katherine Heigl was cast as Stephanie Plum too but she really is a good actress and I think she may pull it off. The thing that really has me upset is Morelli Jason O'Mara please Joe is supposed to be a hot Italian guy. If he looks anything like that picture he looks more like a stuffy Brit. How will I ever root for him? Daniel Sunjata looks like he will make a great Ranger.

How about the actress that played Juno (just saw again on TV over the weekend)? Katherine Heigl is a little too old for the role. Stephanie is under 30. Actress needs vulnerability and that tomboyishness in her character - wisecracker with empathy - Zooey Dechannel? (sp) Somebody we don't even know yet?

My first thought about KH...NO!!!!!!!!! How could they do this to Stephanie Plum??? KH doesn't even look good with brown hair, she wont be able to pull off the accent, and even she said she's unsure about how this is going to play out. Stick to the romantic comedies. They should have gotten an unknown. At least they didn't get Reese Witherspoon, that would have been a disaster. No offense to the actresses but its true.

Katherine Heigl, though an ok actress is definitely not stephanie. so not who I pictured. someone more like anne hathaway or idk someone with crazy hair like stephanie is supposed to have. I also thought about keri russell, but the actress has to be younger in order to have sequels and keep the same stephanie.
Jason O'Mara is definitely not Morelli. HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE HOT, NOT MEDIOCRE.
Daniel Sunjada is a good Ranger, the Rock would be better for Tank considering it would be hard to find someone bigger than him to play Tank and since Tank is supposed to be bigger than ranger.
Joe Morelli should be Jordan Belfi. longer face and more angular. more of a morelli look than Jason O'Mara.
I'm disappointed about the casting for Stephanie and Morelli to be honest. I had a much different picture in my mind for Stephanie, and although I've kept my mind open about Morelli, it still just doesn't fit for me. But Ranger is the one casting choice I'm satisfied with. It works for me, he seems like he will be a decent fit.
I think the cast is AWESOME! While I think Sandra Bullock would be good, Stephanie stays the same age all thru the books, so Sandra will be looking old by the time 16 movies and more (hopefully) are done.I cannot wait for the movie!!! Been waiting way too long!
Just read the preview of the Sixteenth one and it is reiterated that Stephanie has blue eyes. I LOVE Katherine Heigl in everything I've seen her in so far...personality-wise, she could totally pull it off, but she may be a little too pretty, and tall. She's the right age. I can't wait to see what they do with a movie-version!
KH may be able to pull it off. She does comedy well. Color her hair brown, curl it and tone down her looks a bit. She wasn't my first thought either. I think Sandra Bullock would have been amazing as Stephanie but honestly she is a bit too old to play her. Maybe 10 yrs ago. I don't know much about the guy playing Ranger but he is hot! Not too sure about Morelli though. I saw someone like Chris Pine as Morelli.
I'm too excited about the movie to get caught up in the casting for Morelli. Although I wouldn't have chosen Heigl first, I think she'll do well at portraying Stephanie Plum's character. I just wish it was coming out sooner!

But I do think Sheri Sheppard is a great idea for Lulu and Betty White should be Grandma Mazur and the chick they have for Connie doesn't fit the bill either. I was thinking Vin Disel for Ranger. Maybe he can play Tank. HUMMMM I can't wait till they really get into filming.
Maybe hubby will like me enough to take me to set. I have been talking it up since he found out what it was. He didn't believe me when I said just wait till you see what happens. Now he will!
My friends and fans of JE have just learned of the movie today. We were so excited, as we always said there ought to be a movie or even a TV series based on her books.
But the casting is disastrous. While I have nothing againgst any of the actors, they are TOTALLY miss-cast.

What a disappointment. I was so excited about this movie. I think They picked a great Lula. but really Heigal. They just ruined the movie. Any actress would have been better than Heigal. I would have like to see Jennifer Garner as Stephanie. And a little diasppointed in their choice for Morrelli, he's cuter in my head but I will keep an open mind. Chelsea Handler would be great! And she's from Jersey. The Ranger character is ok but i agree with the hunk from Criminal Minds. Even Benjamin Bratt. O'mara is sooo Irish. And even though he is a hunk he is NOT Morelli. Hello ITALIAN. I think the actor that plays Don Draper would be great as Morelli.
And Cloris Leachman as Grandma Masur is perfect.
For Lula Sheppard is good but what about Lonnie Love? She is more believable as a foul mouthed ex hooker with a heart of gold lol. The Rock would be good as Tank her love interest.

They should have realized that all who are fans of the series have a certain idea of what the characters look like. And we have gotten them from the writers description. They should have let Ms. Evonovich pick the characters. After all she created them.
I was hoping for Sandra Bullock as Stephanie Plum ... I have read the series numerous times and have been dying for the movies to start and now well i am not sure i am so excited. I like heigal as an actress but she is going to ruin Stephanie Plum ... at least the choice for Lula was a good one but if they fail with Grandma Muzar, Ranger and Morelli I will be beyond disappointed.

I have loved the Plum books forever!!! Marisa Tomei was always who I saw as Stephanie. If Heigl can pull this off, give her an Oscar!! Sherry as Lulu sounds great. I truly hope Columbia realizes how loved these books and characters are and treat the movie with respect.
I love Heigl and I love O'Mara, but I don't see either of them in these roles. I personally think O'Mara is very sexy, but way too Irish, and very blue-eyed!

I agree with almost all the comments posted - the casting is all wrong! Nothing against the actor's talent, just not right for the role(s). Those of us who are loyal fans & readers of this series obviously feel very passionately about these characters and this story being told as closely to the novels as possible. Hopefully the actors will spend time reading the books not just the script so that they can get a feel for these characters. I would hate for this movie to fail because of bad casting because the books are so good! Maybe we will all be surprised and end up eating our words?!
Terrible casting. Morelli & Ranger are not casted well at all. Ranger to me would be more like the Rock and Morelli is much much more New York Italian looking than that..I don't agree with Katherine Heigl either. I DO however, agree with the girl from the view playing the girl who was the prostitute who goes to work for the bail bond agency.

I was disappointed with the KH choice, but I too, will keep an open mind. I was thinking more along the lines of Jennifer Espisito (Samantha Who?)for Stephanie, Eddie Cibrian for Morelli, Dwayne Johnson as Ranger and Loni Love for Lula. I do like their choice for Ranger, but Morelli? WTHeck? NOT! He better be one great actor to make me think of Morelli from the book!!!

As for Heigl being Stephanie Plum, she is one of my favorites and I love watching her movies. I know she will rock the role of Stephanie Plum.
SO not a fan of who they cast for Morille. The actor is not sexy clean cut in any way. He looks old. They needed a younger clean cut looking guys to play him. He just ruined the who whole movie, and my entire day dream.

I read somewhere that Katherine Heigl was interested in doing the movie, and that is the whole reason that they are making the movie to begin with. Otherwise, the movie might still be tucked away in cinematic limbo, and we would still be dreaming up casting lists.
I was a little shocked at first that KH was going to be Stephanie, but now I really think she will do a good job and nail the part.
I am extremely excited for this movie to come out, and even though it's not my dream casting, I think it is going to be a very good movie. I'll be going to see this in the movie theater guaranteed. :)

I think Katherine Heigl will do a great job as Stephanie! But an Irish guy to play Morelli? Who is supposed to be very Italian(being Italian is the most important part of his character), dark hair dark eyes(she describes his dark eyes often). I don't understand how they came up with an Irish guy, with lighter brown hair and blue gray eyes and pail skin? At least pick someone who could pass as Italian!
I thought the same thing you did with them not picking an Italian guy, but I did some searching around and watched a few of his clips in different roles on Youtube, and I was sold. If you go visit my blog, there are some better pictures of Jason O'Mara with the darker hair and more of an Italian look. He's still not Italian, no, but I think he'll do a great job as Joe Morelli. I have high hopes anyway!!

I am having a hard time trying to picture who I think would make a good Stephanie Plum. I don't agree with the choices of these characters so far. Because of my age, I am picturing people who may be too old for these roles now but in my mind, would have fit them back in their younger days. I was shocked to see that others shared my opinions on a couple of the characters. Here are some of my choices based on my interpretation of the character's descriptions:
Grandma Mazure - Cloris Leachman
Lula - Sherri Shepherd or Queen Latifah
Tank - Terry Crews, Dwayne Johnson or Michael Clarke Duncan
Morelli - Peter Facinelli, Antonio Sabato Jr., Bradley Cooper, Robert "Bobby" Cannavale, Chris Evans or Michael Easton (definitely not Jason O'Mara)
Ranger - Mario Cimarro (Daniel Sunjata is handsome but not my first choice)
Vinnie - Danny DeVito
Not so sure about Connie's role. I'm picturing a younger Marisa Tomei.

Ewwwww this whole movie just seems like it's an after thought and they wanted to hurry up and make something. Doesn't feel like a movie that's been planned out and taken great care with. Just another mediocre movie to go straight to DVD then sit on shelves to collect dust.

I've read all the books and always pictured Sandra Bullock as Stephanie, Olympia Dukakis as her mother, Monique as Lulu (sheri shephard isn't big enough). If Bobby Abreu (baseball) was taller he would have made a great Ranger -he has the sexiest smile just like Ranger. I think the Morelli and Vinnie they picked are fine. But Debbie Reynolds as Grandma Mazur - no way.
I have to admit. When my sister told me that the Grey’s Anatomy girl was casted to play Stephanie my heart dropped just a little. (My whole family has read all the books, even my husband even though he probably wouldn't admit it)
But I had looked into it and found that Katherine has the fans in mind and is working hard not to disappoint. That along with the new pics of her like the above one. I think she can pull it off.
Plus, really, when I read the books I was kind of thinking of myself as Stephanie... but since I am just Not available for the part I guess Katherine will do ;).
All in all, I'm pretty excited! And am going to try to keep in mind that I WILL be disappointed at least a little because that's how it goes when a book is made into a movie.

Sandra Bullock is the ONLY one I can picture as Stephanie! Debbie Reynolds should be great, although I would have picked Betty White. Have no idea who the men cast are--will have to see on that one.

I think Dan Sunjata is perfect for the role of Ranger. Why so many people suggest The Rock is beyond me. Ranger in the first book is in his 20s and not even close to 6 feet tall. Sunjata fits physically and is incredibly good looking.

Lula is about the only one close to what you'd picture in your minds eye. There are so many other worthy actors/actresses and I think they keep pushing back the release date because they have heard the public outcry against the casting. I mean, come on, we're talking a long franchise and they've casted people who cannot support the characters. Totally disappointed!

Now that I know KH will play Plum, I can't picture anyone else but her and I think she will do justice to the character. The guy who will play Ranger is a great choice, seems to fit the part. I agree with everyone that the casting is all wrong. Some of the suggestions are right on, but others need to keep the character's age in mind. (come on...Morelli is supposed to make you melt when you see him; not happening with this dude!) Even though I don't agree with the actors they've chosen, I can't wait to see the movie. Worst, worst casting ever!!! Have read all of the books and the narcissistic Heigl is completely wrong choice for Stephanie. Bad casting for everyone except Grandma and Sheri's role. I won't be seeing any of these movies!!
