Ranger and Morelli cast in the One for the Money movie!

Joe Morelli will be played by Jason O'Mara (Life on Mars) and Ranger will be played by Daniel Sunjata (Rescue Me). Here is the article from Variety.com.

Jason O'Mara will star opposite Katherine Heigl in crime thriller "One for the Money," from Lakeshore Entertainment and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment.
Daniel Sunjata has also been cast in the film which is based on the first tome in Janet Evanovich's bestselling Stephanie Plum series about a female bounty hunter. Lionsgate recently picked up domestic distribution.

Story centers on Plum finding herself newly divorced, living in Trenton, N.J., and taking a job with her slimy cousin in the bail bond business. Her first big case is a local cop and former b.f., played by O'Mara, who's wanted for murder.

Sunjata's signed to portray a disciplined veteran bounty hunter.

Julie Ann Robinson's directing, and Liz Brixius is rewriting the adapted script. Producers are Lakeshore chair-CEO Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi, SKE chair Sidney Kimmel and Wendy Finerman ("The Devil Wears Prada").

Huh. Not who I pictured but neither is Heigl. More than a little disapointed, but that's due to KH more than anything. (I've not liked her in anything I've seen her in...)

This is going down on the DVD list ~ not a "must see" in the theatres.

I did some research on Daniel Sunjata, apparently he has come under media scrutiny for saying 9/11 was an inside job.

IMHO he looks a little too straight laced, for Ranger.

IMHO Jason O'Mara isn't even italian? He sure doesn't look right for Morelli.

I am still excited about the movie, and I need to let everything go so I can enjoy the movie!

Hmmm... Well... Ranger ok, but heigel is a crummy choice and this o'mara guy, while cute is the anti morelli in ever way! Dark hair might help, but his features are DEFINITLY not italian... Sucks that they waited so ling and now they cast crummy fitting actors!!! I still think Carla gugino would have been waaay better for Stephanie, or even Rachel weisz... Oh well

Katherine Heigl as Stephanie??? NO NO, WRONG WRONG WRONG. Daniel Sunjata I can live with as Ranger but Jason O'Mara as Morelli?? Wow that's off. Get someone else, anyone else...I don't care who. Vin Diesel, Ryan Reynolds, anyone with the correct color eyes?

What about the black guy that plays in Criminal Minds as Ranger? I HATE the idea of Heigl as Stephanie Plum and the choice for Morelli....ALL WRONG!!

I dont agree with any of these. I think Sandra Bullock should play Stephanie and The Rock should play ranger. Not sure who should play Morelli.

Colin Farrell would be great for Morelli, but he's a little too short; maybe Jake Gyllenhall. I thought Keira Knightly or Natalie Portman could play Stephanie, but I also like the previous poster's suggestion of Carla Gugino or Rachel Weisz. Katherine Heigl is too tall (I disagree that she's too skinny; Keira Knightly or Natalie Portman are probably too skinny).

OMG!!! The characters they picked could not have been a bigger mismatch! It is quite obvious whoever is doing the casting never so much as touched the book let a lone read it! Hello Morelli is suppose to be HOT and a heart throbb that guy is NOT!!! I could have live with no names better than this, they need to start over and recast people who fit if they hope not to disgrace the book and for people to actually see it in the movie theater as it stands the turn out will be LOW!

Very frustrated with Heigl as the choice for Stephanie. I started reading this series several years ago and turned my wife and her sister both onto it. It's funny and smart. Whoever is responsible for the casting is NEITHER! ;o)
The guy for Ranger isn't bad, but I always had Vin Diesel or Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in mind for Ranger. O'Mara looks nothing like Morelli in the books. It's irritating when they don't really try to match them up. I was similairly dissillusioned when they made Clive Cussler's Sahara into a movie and cast Matthey McConaughey as Dirk Pitt. Pitt has green eyes MM has Blue! They didn't even bother to give him colored contacts! It reminds me of casting Nikki Reed as Rosalie in the Twilight series. A pale blonde character cast by someone with a darker complexion and brunette hair! WTH?
Oh well, I guess we can't change anything, but I sure hope that they don't butcher the storyline like they have the casting or I won't even bother going to the theatres to support this.

For Lula MoNique (from Push)
For Connie Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding)or Eva Mendez
For grandma Mazur Cloris Leachman (of course!!)

I totally agree that Heigl, to anyone who loves the Plum series, is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. I liked someone's idea of Bullock, but she may not be available. I've lived in Jersey & know what Jersey girls look like & Heigl ain't it! I can live with Sunjata & loved O'Mara in "Life on Mars". Darken his hair & give him the same eye color & he'd be OK. Love MoNique for Lula (not sure if she's big enough lately), Nia Vardalos would be great for Connnie & Cloris - perfect for Gramdma Mazur. I wouldn't pay full price to see Heigl in this, but I would rent it for $1 from Redbox. What a disappointment for true Plum fans!

heigle is WRONG, O'mara is WRONG, BUT the guy they got for ranger is ok. Sandra Bullock whould be who plays stephanie.

I am devastated at the casting choices for this movie. I imagined people that actually matched the descriptions of the characters in the books. I don't know that I could go to the theater to see it.

NO NO NO NO! Its all wrong. They dont fit the profile. It should be Sandra Bullock as Stephanie Plum, Vin Diesel as Ranger, Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Joe Morelli, Queen Latifah as Lula, Jason Mewes as Mooner, Betty White as Grandma Mazur, Camryn Manheim as Connie. I could go on and on. Ive been planning this since I first read the books when I was 15 years old. Now you are messing it up BIG TIME.

Wrong guy for Morelli. Need an Italian! Also Sherry Shepherd is wrong for Lula. And - Grandma Mazur should be Betty White. No brainer!

Guys- chill. It's really not important if an actor's hair is a few shades off what you imagined, or if -gasp- their eye colour is different from the character's. Guaranteed, most people who see this movie aren't going to be outraged by someone having the wrong colour eyes and end up leaving the theatre in a huff. Give the film a chance- for all you know these actors might be perfect for their respective roles, even if they don't look it in their everyday lives. Speaking from experience, actors hate being typecast, which is what all you people are trying to do- "oh, this person looks like this character, they should have picked him instead!" It's also important to remember that the movie version will never be as good as the books. Get over it and enjoy the movie for what it is.

When someone reads a book they automatically picture the character in their minds. I agree this is hard to satisfy. With that being said...Heigl is a horrible choice. She was given a role of a lifetime on Grey Anatomy and all she could do is complain about the arrangement. She is not a good person and does not fit for Stephanie's character. I will watch this movie but will wait until I can only spend $1 at Redbox.

I also agree that Morelli should be Itallian. Grandma should be played by Betty White!!!

It is a shame if this movie is a flop because the books are tremendous.

I was very disappointed when they announced Heigl as Stephanie. Sandra Bullock would have been better. Heck even Drew Barrymore would work. I am ok with the guy they have playing Ranger. Morelli should be played by someone like James Franco or Eric Bana. Joe Pesci could play Vinnie. Connie could be played by Debi Mazar. I hope that this cast can do the books justice. Often the movies are never as good as the books. Sigh!

I agree with Sandra Bullock as Stephanie and the Rock as Ranger. I think Neicy Nash or Mo'nique would be better as Lula squeezing themselves into spandex several sizes too small. However, was Lula even in the first book?

Sandra Bullock would have been good 10 years ago, but not now. I lost friends when planes flew into my building in 9/11 Saudi terrorist, I won't watch any movie with the idiot playing Ranger

Anonymous said...

Sooooo disappointed! Not at all what I expected. Read in another blog where Stephanie was Sandra Bullock, Morelli was Jeffrey Dean...(can't remember his last name) and Ranger was The Rock... that's more like it. The choice for Morelli doesn't seem like a "Morelli" , totally ruined my crush.

I agree Heigl is a bad choice, so are both actors for Ranger and Morelli schould be the Rock for Ranger and Antonio Sabato Jr. for Morelli and Cloris Leachman for Grandma Mazur.
Will not be going to see this at the Theater will maybe rent at red box.

The only explanation I can come up with to justify these casting choices would be if their budget wasn't huge and they flat out couldn't afford to cast the people they really should have!

I'm not crazy about the guys they cast as Ranger and Morelli. For me, Dwayne Johnson is the no duh choice for Ranger. The Rescue Me guy is cute and tall, but kind of gangly and he just doesn't seem very dangerous! I can't think of a good Morelli (how about Robert Pattinson? JUST KIDDING!), but I agree that the features on this fellow aren't quite right for Morelli. I liked him in Life on Mars, and I know he plays a cop well, just not Morelli. Maybe he'll win me over, he certainly seems the most promising of the lot. Just hope they give him brown contacts.

I also agree that Betty White should be Grandma Mazur. Of course she should! Who else could possibly do Grandma Mazur justice?!

Like everyone else, the choice that is sending this one straight to my DVD queue is Katherine Heigl. She is HORRIBLE! She always plays the same whiny, uppity character and I have every reason to expect she will do the same here. She tends to come across as extremely unlikable and casting her seems a sure fire way to make a movie flop. Really, can anyone think of ANYTHING good that she has been in? Or even one of her movies that has done particularly well? Aside from that, she's too tall, not nearly spunky enough and looks awful with brown hair.

Like everyone, I wanted to see Sandra Bullock as Stephanie. So what if she's a decade or so over the mark? She's gorgeous and I don't think the story would lose anything by aging Stephanie a little (and not a lot, as Sandra looks much closer to 37 than 47!) They could have done worse I suppose. (Keira Knightly, for example, already failed pathetically as a bounty hunter in Domino. No one wants to see that boney girl rolling around on the floor with Morelli, all knees and elbows and fish pout.) There are so many better choices! I particularly liked the idea of JoAnna Garcia from Reba as Stephanie, provided they wanted someone younger or less well known. She's spunky, comic and cute as a button, especially with dark hair. She's someone who could get into all sorts of trouble and you'd still root for her!

It's just so disappointing to see such an epic casting fail for such a wonderfully entertaining book series! If they ever make a sequel, I hope to god that they recast!

I would have rather seen Dwayne Johnson for Ranger and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Morelli ahhhh why do they do these things with such a good book we want men we can sink our teeth into!!

I'm not happy about this. Ranger isn't scary looking and is too clean cut. They left out one of the most IMPORTANT PARTS of his look which is long hair. He's supposed to look like a badass, not a Calvin Klein ad.

I think Sherri Shepherd is perfectly cast as Lulu. As I was reading the books, I always thought she would be perfect after watching her in Less Than Perfect.

It is a shame about the casting choice of Stephanie and Morelli. I am a long time fan of this series and am disappointed that true italians were not cast for these parts. I would have preferred Italian nobodies to Heigl and O'Mara. Sunjata as Ranger is too young of a choice, but he sure is hot!!!!!! I hope to see both his frontal and his back side view in the movie :)

Anonymous said...

poor choice The Rock or perhaps Moore from criminal minds for Ranger. as for Morelli I'll be back with my choice but right now the choice made was wrong

jessuhhhhlynnn said...

You people are mean! Daniel Sunjata will be great as Ranger. Ranger is supposed to be a big hunk of muscly eye candy, Daniel Sunjata is! Get over it! Give these actors a chance. I have never seen O'mara perform, but in a way he seems okay for Morelli. I don't agree with Heigl as stephanie, but only because I wanted someone less well-known for her. But I am Willing to give her a chance. And B T W, Sandra Bullock would SUCK as Stephanie. Too old (the comment about her looking 37 is way off!)! And Dawayne Johnson is not hot enough to play Ranger. Sorry but he is not.

ranger's so ugly as compared to the imaginary character i made up in my mind while reading the book :(((( and morelli should reaaaaaally be hotter he doesnt even look italian!!! ranger's supposed to be yummy hahaha and morelli should be yummier :))

i like lula's character same as the character i had in mind!

Anonymous said...

I jus watched the movie n katherine did great also rangrr was good lula as well watch the movie geez

Anonymous said...

I am sorry but Katherine did NOT do great... Her accent was forced, the timing of her lines turned sure-fire jokes into painful cliches and she was way TOOOO whiny overall.

Also Debbie Reynolds was wayyyyyy too sweet to be Grandma Mazur, the actress playing Connie could've used a lil' more sass, and O'Mara as Morelli seem more like a deranged psycho at times. There was a lack of the chemistry the book describes between Stephanie and Morelli. Heck, even the father was cast wrong as far as I'm concerned. I will however concede that Sunjata as Ranger was passable.

The only nail they hit right on the head was Sherri Sheppard. Sure she wasn't as big as Lula is described, but she makes up for it in personality.

Anonymous said...

I totally agree! I have read every book, and Sandra as Stephanie is the only fit! I always pictured the Rock as Ranger. The only one they got right is Sherry S as Lulu!

I was upset at first also, but in the end I thing Heigl pulled it off. The characters are the least of a list of problems in this chop job they did to the storyline. What is big blue in the movie? Could they not find a 53 Buick with portholes?
